Senior Mining Engineer - Surface Mine Planning

About the role

Rio Tinto is looking for a Senior Mining Engineer to join its surface mining team in Ulaanbaatar. You will provide expertise in mine engineering across planning and practice, supporting safe and economically viable mining operations. The role covers tactical and strategic mine planning, design and scheduling for surface mining, helping optimise production and manage technical risks.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in developing control of excavation instructions, working closely with technical and operations teams to recover ore reserves safely and efficiently.
• Maintain production monitoring and reporting systems to track performance and identify opportunities to improve quality and productivity.
• Develop and manage mine development, construction and production schedules, integrating them with short- and long-term forecasting systems.
• Monitor variances against the short- and medium-term mine schedule and recommend adjustments.
• Take part in technical risk assessments and help develop procedures to mitigate technical risks.
• Occasionally give informal guidance to new team members to support their onboarding.

Required profile

• Demonstrated experience in mine planning, design and scheduling in surface mining operations.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, able to optimise production while keeping safety and economic efficiency in mind.
• Effective communication skills and the ability to work cross-functionally with technical and operational teams.
• A proactive attitude towards identifying and acting on improvements.

Required skills

• Proficiency in mining software and tools used for mine planning and scheduling.
