Senior Lawyer

About the role

Rio Tinto Mongolia is looking for an experienced, commercially‑mindful Senior Lawyer to join its permanent team in Ulaanbaatar. Reporting to the Chief Counsel, you will partner with senior leaders and cross‑functional teams to provide pragmatic legal advice on a wide range of commercial, operational and regulatory matters.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver timely, commercially focused legal advice on complex, time‑critical issues.
• Research, interpret and apply Mongolian laws, regulations and emerging legal developments.
• Identify, assess and manage legal risks across operations, projects and corporate activities.
• Draft, review and negotiate commercial, procurement, partnership and project agreements.
• Advise on employment law, workplace disputes, corporate governance, compliance and litigation.
• Coordinate with external counsel, government regulators and internal subject‑matter experts.

Required profile

• Law degree from a recognised university and eligibility to practice law in Mongolia.
• Minimum five years of relevant experience in a leading law firm, major corporation or resources organisation.
• Strong knowledge of Mongolian commercial and corporate law; experience in employment, regulatory, compliance, disputes or mining law is a plus.
• Advanced written and spoken Mongolian and English with excellent legal drafting ability.
• Sound commercial judgement, analytical skills and the confidence to provide constructive challenge.
